One day while searching for a good blog topic I listed the "10 Blogs to Read to Get Smart on Open Source". Now I think Alex is funning me since I listed Microsoft’s Port 25 as one of the ten. Don and some others had made some additional suggestions to my RSS reader, ironically one of them was Alex’s. Don also has an automated scrip that collects links for a Top 40 Linux Blogs list which is based on some quantitative criterion but by his own omission is probably just another "bogus" top 10.
Which brings me to the topic, why top ten lists are interesting (at least to me). I enjoy top ten lists because there are tons of good websites and bad websites. Having a filter beyond Google for topics that interest me are helpful. Also I think it’s probably some tangentaltype of voyeurism giving you a peak at what others think and read. So while I think that a Top 10 is far from an authoritative Top 10 of anything other than the top 10 opinions of one person. Maybe I need atop 10 reasons I like top 10s…
