Slowly Progressing on Mac
I have been using my Mac Book Pro sporadically over the last few weeks. The learning curve is a little greater than I expected but that’s okay. There are some things about Mac OS X that I really like:
- Expose - I really like the way you can tile and minimize windows. F9, F10, F11are quickly becoming my friends, though I think I would like to get a mouse with some extra buttons to map the minimize the windows with a mouse click. The other option is to use gestures which I am experimenting with as well.
- Installing Software - My biggest impression with Mac is just how easy it is to install software, just drag the .dmg file to the applications folder and software installs no problems so far.
- Wireless- Mac handles wireless so much better than Windows. I just click on the wireless icon on the task bar and choose a network. When I insert my EVDO card it just works no extra software needed.
There are some things about Mac that I don’t like:
- No backspace - As a windows or Linux user you expect the backspace key to be there but on Mac you have a delete key. Still working on an alternative for that one.
- Installing X11 - I am unable to get the X11 update to install, I downloaded it from Apple but it says I have a newer version installed, though OpenOffice.org keeps telling me to install X11.
- Email- Right now I am using Thunderbird for mail but I really want an Outlook-like alternative. If I get X11 installed I would be fine using Evolution for Mac. I have Entourage installed but I am not convinced that’s the route I am going to go either. It’s a little goofy on a Mac,then again Outlook is a little goofy on Windows. My other thought would be to use Outlook and wine with Codeweavers but that’s still in beta. Also it remains to be seen if I will be able to launch Codeweavers from mailto: links in web pages and if I will beable to sync my Treo.
- Palm Treo Sync - This is one of my most difficult tasks hopefully I will have more of this soon.
Bill has been giving me a hard time about not making the move off Windows to Mac OS very quickly. However, the move isn’t that big of a deal it’s just preparing for the move. He moved to Mac and moved back to Windows in a couple months time. I don’t think I will have a hard time with it because until the beginning of this year I had been usinga Linux desktop for two or three years. So switching isn’t the issue, after hearing the reviews on Vista, it seems that Mac OS is the key it’s just a matter of time. I just want to be prepared.
